James Breeden sets 9-season 1s scoring record

16 Jan 2018

22 year-old James Breeden scored twice for the OHAFC 1st XI on Saturday to help the Blues beat Repton 5-2 and, in the process, he set a new goalscoring record for the 1st XI since stats began at the start of the 2009/10 season.

Previously, Harry Hoffen had set the high mark for 1st XI goals in all competitions in a single season when he scored 17 in the 2011/12 campaign. That season the OHAFC 1st XI were competing for the League title and enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals of the Arthur Dunn Cup.

Harry's total of 17 was undoubtedly swelled by the six goals scored in the first round of the Cup at home to Fourth Division side the Old Epsomians.

But he still scored in 11 of the 15 games he played in (the 1s played in 21 competitive fixtures that season), including a number of vital strikes:

  • the only goal in the trip to Chigwell (pictured below)
  • a last-minute winner against Haileybury at home
  • the first goal in a narrow 2-1 win at home to Chigwell
  • the winner in the vital home game against leaders Charterhouse
  • both goals in the 2-0 home win over Forest
  • the opener in the 2-1 home win over Eton

Harry was to score only twice in the final six League games of the season after a torn hamstring suffered in the excruciating Dunn Cup quarter-final defeat at Tonbridge.

And James Breeden has had an even greater impact on the 1s this season, albeit in Division One. Remarkably, he has scored in every game he has played, missing only the Dunn Cup first round tie with Alleynians and the disappointing home defeat to Berkhamsted.

After a relatively quiet start with a goal in each of the first two games against Cholms and Bradfield, James then exploded into form, scoring hat-tricks in three of his next four appearances. Sadly, his treble in the Cup replay at Dulwich wasn't sufficient to earn the Blues a ticket to the next round.

Undaunted, he marched on with a solitary effort in the return fixture with Bradfield and doubles against Brentwood, Malvern and, on Saturday, Repton.

This remarkable run of goalscoring sees James with a total of 19 to date from 10 appearances. With six games remaining for the side, should he play in every game and continue scoring at the same rate of 1.9 goals a game, he would theoretically end the season with 30 goals - which would challenge any OHAFC player in history for goals scored in a single season.

Sadly, with records prior to 2009 incomplete, and memories of the older generations somewhat diminished, it will never be possible to state James' final total as a definitive all-time OHAFC record.

What we can do is wish him the best of luck in his bid to continue this incredible run and hope that his goals will be sufficient to earn the 1s promotion back into the Premier Division at the first time of asking - it is surely the stage his talents deserve to be tested on.
