Pre-Season Week 2 Report

27 Jul 2016

Week 2 of pre-season saw another 12 OH's gather for a rather more strenuous session of training under leaden skies in Hyde Park.

There were a number of notable first sightings of the summer, including 1st XI captain Ed Poulter, vice-captain Fred Milln and former vice-captain Fred Richardson.

Fellow 1st XI midfielders Jack Hill and John Portal also returned with Giles Newton adding further quality. Alex Ellis made his debut at an OHAFC session and provided some calm assurance at the back for colours, alongside another summer debutant, club accountant, Jack 'Gooner' Robinson.

There were, as usual during pre-season, some players below par: 2nd XI captain Geoff Taunton-Collins is nursing a hamstring strain that is clearly not 100% and his new 2nd XI summer signing David Lederman is also struggling with the effects of glandular fever, meaning he was restricted to running even less than usual. Fortunately an early twinge in Jack Hill's groin was attributed to his previous night's 'activities' and he was able to continue after some gentle rubbing.

The awful quality of the pitch saw plenty of highlight reel gaffes, with the ball constantly bouncing over people's feet, onto their arms and through their legs. Still, unlike the two Manchester clubs, the OHAFC put on a brave face and managed to get an hour's play in before ending with a brief series of shuttle runs.
