Vets lose Cup thriller in agonising fashion

19 Mar 2018

The OHAFC Veterans exited the Derrick Moore Veterans Cup in the most excruciating circumstances on Sunday morning, throwing away a 2-1 lead with just nine minutes of extra-time remaining to lose 3-2 to Chigwell on a snow-bound astroturf in east London.

The visitors were second best for long spells of the tie, and trailed after just five minutes following a mistake from 'keeper Bobby Tindall.

But the black and white stripes gamely hung on and were gifted an equaliser on the half-hour when Harry Hoffen fell under a challenge on the edge of the box and Dom Danos converted the resulting penalty.

Harrow hit the post straight from the second half re-start but from then on Chigs resumed their domination. Only some resolute defending and an increasingly assured goalkeeping display from Tindall forced the game into extra-time.

With nine minutes remaining Harrow scored what looked to be the winner with a superb goal, Paul Molloy driving through midfield to tee up Hoffen, who finished expertly into the bottom corner.

But the tiring visitors couldn't hold on. Chigs levelled three minutes later and snatched the win with just two minutes remaining, Ed Thorn unluckily deflecting a defensive header over his own 'keeper from a free-kick.

It was tough luck on a gallant Harrow side who were missing several key players and fought until the bitter end.
