The OHAFC 1st XI began their preparations for the 2018/19 season with an encouraging 2-0 win over the Old Marlburians at Colliers Wood FC on Wednesday night.
Despite the fixture arriving with holiday season still in full swing, returning skipper Yunus Sert was able to name a strong squad of fourteen for the game, with many of last season's regulars available.
The quality of the Blues' lineup showed for much of the first half as the hosts dominated their opponents from the kick-off, creating numerous chances. Last season's leading scorer James Breeden took only ten minutes to chalk up his first effort of the campaign with a well-worked goal, but the hosts could not add to their tally and the narrow lead at the break was a source of some frustration.
The second half proved a more scrappy affair as the Blues lost much of the rhythm in their passing. Despite this, Alex Gilbert scored a second with ten minutes remaining to ensure a winning start to the new campaign and skipper Sert was more than pleased with the efforts of his squad.
In six days' time an OHAFC intra-club friendly will allow players further opportunity to fine tune their fitness before the real fun and games begin in mid-September.
