Fred Richardson

biography

‘Reg’ joined the club in time for the 2008/9 season and established himself in the 1st XI setup thanks to his superb fitness levels and ability to play in multiple positions across the back four and in midfield.

He started 12 of the 16 League games the side played on its way to the Premier Division title in 2009/10, including the final six wins, showing tremendous battling spirit and will to win either alongside skipper Baker in central midfield or as an overlapping right-back.

Sadly, Reg was one of a number of players to suffer long-term injury during the 2010/11 campaign (fortunately his sister is a qualified physiotherapist!) and he didn’t make an appearance for the side until early February, playing once, before re-appearing in March – this time the injury had healed properly and he managed to string together six consecutive appearances, scoring his first goal for the club in the process in the 5-1 thumping of Brentwood on the hill.

Nevertheless, his contribution during the previous year had been noted and he was awarded the Bert Worthy Young Player of the Year trophy in 2010 for his early efforts.

Reg was appointed Club Fixture Secretary and 1st XI Vice-Captain in 2010 but he endured yet further injury frustrations in 2012 when his weakened shoulder finally forced him to have an operation. Coupled with work commitments, the man who was supposed to be the new 1st XI vice-captain made an early decision to sit the season out, meaning he played only twice.

His return to full fitness at the start of the 2013/14 season, coupled with Ed Martins' decision to temporarily hang up his boots, meant Reg once again returned as vice-captain under Ed Poulter. He played in 13 games during the season but injury and work duties meant he could never consistently perform to the best of his abilities week-in, week-out.

He made another ten League appearances in 2014/15 as the 1s battled unsuccessfully to avoid the drop as well as playing in all three Dunn Cup games.

Reg was again hampered by injuries in the early stages of the 2015/16 season, restricting him to just three League appearances by the middle of January. Once fit again, he became a more regular presence in the side and ended the promotion-winning campaign with eleven appearances in total in League and Cup.

He played nine times for the 1s the following season as they unsuccessfully tried to stave off the drop back into Division One and turned out once for the 2nd XI.

At the start of the 2017/18 season Reg was again named vice-captain to provide an experience shoulder for new skipper Yunus Sert to lean on. Reg began the season playing in a variety of positions and happily announced his engagement to his long-term girlfriend just prior to Christmas.
