The 2nd XI travelled to Chiswick to play the Old Salopians in what was their final game of the season. A strong team was selected for what was in effect a dead rubber with the OH's looking to finish off a strong second half of the season with a win.
A Friday night squad of 15 had suddenly dropped to 13, including the semi-crippled pair of Max Curry and Captain Taunton-Collins . Chopra was 'available' and selected but had forgotten he was in Windsor - the squad was suddenly down to 12. The squad may have been depleted but it was certainly a strong one: Sert was drafted in to partner Will Orr-Ewing in the heart of the defence, whilst Portal sat alongside Hovey in central midfield.
The 2s could have been forgiven for a slow start, with a number of players finding themselves the wrong side of the Thames and turning up just in time for kick off. However, continuing a 2016's rich vein of form, Harrow came flying out of the blocks and found themselves in the lead within minutes of kick off. A slick passing move sliced the Salopians open, with Ollie Curry picking out Alhadeff who duly slotted home.
It was at 1-0 that Shrewsbury had their best chance of the game. A moment of sloppiness from the OH back four handed the Salops' centre forward a golden opening; he could only scuff his shot onto the post. This was as close as Shrewsbury would get all game - Sert was imperious at the back, and Orr-Ewing as composed as ever.
Harrow soon doubled their lead. Jamie Barwick, who terrorised the Salopian right back all afternoon, pressed hard to win a corner. His graft was rewarded when the resultant ball into box fell kindly for him at the back post. He made no mistake and the OH's found themselves 2-0 up.
The half continued in much the same vein. Fluid football was hard to come by on what was one of the most uneven pitches the team had played on. When Harrow did get the ball down, they caused problems. Hugo Trower, playing at 10, linked up well throughout with Ollie Curry and Barwick. Harrow created chance after chance and inevitably their lead was increased. It was Trower who duly provided the ball that led to Harrow's third, with Alhadeff doubling his tally with a good low finish.
Alhadeff went on to complete a classy first half hat-trick and almost guarantee the 2nd XI Golden Boot (much to the annoyance of closest rivals Max Curry - who had to watch from the sidelines with a strained abdomen, and a hobbling Taunton-Collins - who had to look over Alhadeff's shoulder from right back). This time it was Barwick who turned provider, capping off a fine individual performance. Alhadeff really should have had a fourth; once again finding himself in a great position only to miss an open goal from a few yards out (a bobble apparently).
The second half, to the Salopians' credit, was a much closer affair. Both midfield's battled for control and chances were few and far between.
The damage had already been done by Alhadeff and co, who put in a very strong individual performance. Alhadeff's finishing was much improved and he looked a real threat whenever he got onto the ball. Sert was voted man of the match for a commanding performance at the back; he didn't allow the opposition striker a sniff.
It was a very satisfying win for the OHs to end an up and down season that was finished very strongly. The squad will be hoping that this bodes well for next season, when they will be looking to start better and mount a promotion charge.
