A ridiculous cock-up saw the OHAFC 1st XI squad drive all the way to Bradfield College near Reading on Saturday - only to be told their fixture with the Old Bradfieldians was actually being played on an astroturf in Twickenham.

The resulting chaos saw the squad arrive an hour late for the original kick-off and the match reduced to seventy minutes as a result. Unsurprisingly, this chaotic preparation did little to help the Blues, and despite taking an early lead through skipper Yunus Sert, some basic defensive lapses allowed the hitherto unbeaten Bradfieldians to score five and run out comfortable winners.

Despite an email being sent to the OHAAFC confirming the venue change earlier in midweek, the message was not properly relayed and instead of the trek down the M4, the squad should have just had a simple journey down to Twickenham.

When the dozen OHs did arrive at the correct ground, there was no way the game could last the full ninety minutes, with subsequent bookings on the astroturf limiting the match to just 35 minutes each way.

There was no time for any warm-ups and the match kicked off immediately. Both sides, understandably, looked rusty given the circumstances but it was the visitors who took the lead, skipper Yunus Sert scoring his first ever goal for the club on his 61st appearance.

The joy was short-lived however, as a series of basic defensive errors allowed the hosts back into the match and they were to score three times before the break.

Having run the journey out of their legs, the Blues improved after the break and the second half turned out to be a much more even affair. Unfortunately, despite scoring twice through Josh Adejokun (also his first ever OHAFC goal) and James Breeden, the defensive lapses continued and Bradfield more than did enough to hold onto their two-goal advantage.

Although the fixture chaos could be attributable in many respects for the poor performance, the artificial surface also made life tricky for the Blues, with a lack of confidence in the passing meaning the side never really got going.

After strolling to promotion in their previous season in Division One a couple of years ago, a record of one point from their first two games suggests this season may be a different story.

Next week the side enjoy their first home game of the season with the visit of Aldenham to the Hill. Hopefully the simplicity of the fixture arrangements and the pristine Phil pitches will allow the side to rediscover their potential and earn a much-needed first win of the season.
