3s fall just short in bid for silverware

22 Apr 2024

A scrappy goal from a corner ten minutes into the second half was enough to earn the Old Berkhamstedians 2s a narrow 1-0 victory over the OHAFC 3rd XI in the final of the David Woolcott trophy on Saturday morning, in the process denying the Blues their first ever silverware in the Arthurian League.

In a tight, tense game played in tricky conditions, with a strong breeze blowing across the pitch at Merchant Taylors School, both sides had chances in the opening twenty minutes before the pace dropped somewhat and the game became devoid of any goalmouth action.

The OHAFC, playing in their new white away strip, started the second half brightly and looked capable of breaking the deadlock only for the Berkhamstedians to earn a corner at the other end and a near-post flick-on took a couple of deflections before somehow bouncing past two defenders on the line.

Despite their best efforts, the men in white failed to find an equaliser, struggling to create any clear-cut chances against a strong, well-organised Berkhamsteds rearguard, the final whislte signalling an end to OHAFC dreams of silverware for another season.

Nevertheless, it was a superb effort from skipper Joss Awdry and his men and the squad can now enjoy a well-deserved break over the summer months.
