Fiddler on the Roof star joins club Xmas drinks

5 Dec 2016

A star of the West End musical the Fiddler on the Roof was the surprise guest at the OHAFC Xmas drinks party held at the Pembroke Pub in Earls Court on Saturday night.

In truth, with neither the 1st or 3rd XI's having any idea the event was taking place, the guest list amounted to half the 2s squad, club Chairman Quentin Baker, Alex Breeden and the two Hoffen brothers, who arrived somewhat the worse for wear following a trip to the rugby earlier that afternoon.

The disappointing turnout was a shame as jovial host Azhar Khan had laid on a fine spread for the soiree, a Mediterranean mezze arriving midway through proceedings. There was some doubt as to what was contained within the large, battered rings that were spread willy-nilly across a bed of strangely-pink sauce with some expecting a filling of crunchy onion, others hoping for some chewy, fishy squid. As it turned out, it was squid, with even the normally fish-averse Woolley greedily tucking in.

Plenty of drinks later, with Ubers having been arranged to transport several of the guests to local nightclub to the stars 151, it was time for a commemorative photo to capture the evening for posterity. And there was a lovely surprise in store when a rather jolly Harry Hoffen invited in the lead cast member of Fiddler on the Roof, who had clearly just returned from the evening performance in the West End and been unable to change out of his costume.

At the current rate of progression, next year's Xmas club drinks are on schedule to be attended by four players and half the cast of Starlight Express. Opinion is divided as to whether this would be more or less fun than the annual Arthurian League dinner...
