OHAFC all-time leading scorer calls time on 1s

2 Aug 2017

Harry Hoffen, the OHAFC's leading goalscorer of all-time, has decided to call time on his 1st XI career at the age of 40 and from next season will play under the command of Geoff Taunton-Collins in the 2s.

Harry's retirement from regular 1st XI football closes a glorious chapter in the Club's history - Harry was the last member of the so-called 'Golden Generation' still playing 1st XI football on a regular basis. The side of the 2000's that won the First Division at the turn of the Century before going on to win the Premier Division twice and the Arthur Dunn Cup in 2007 has gradually broken up: most members of the squad have retired from Saturday football with only Paul Molloy, who continues to turn out a few times each season for the 1s, and David Lederman, now a regular in the 2s, still representing the Club in the Arthurian League.

The effect on the 1st XI's goalscoring prowess by Harry's retirement cannot be overstated: even at 40 he remains one of the quickest players in the entire League and his record speaks for itself - 58 goals in 87 1st XI appearances over the past 8 seasons in addition to at least as many scored during his heyday before appearance and goals stats were regularly kept.

Harry regularly led the line for the Arthurian League rep side and is one of only three players from the OHAFC to have represented the AFA, being awarded his tie after playing five games for them.

It was fitting that Harry's final act as a regular member of the 1st XI was to score the side's last goal of the season, a stunning left-foot strike into the top corner away to champions the Old Carthusians (pictured).

Ironically, this was Harry's only goal of the campaign as work commitments restricted him to making just six appearances for the side. Nevertheless, any doubts as to his effectiveness as a goalscorer are dispelled by his record the previous season in Division One: 11 goals in 14 1st XI starts.

His arrival in the 2s squad boosts an already-impressive array of attacking talent at Geoff Taunton-Collins' disposal: the Club's three leading scorers from last season all played for the 2s with Gbemniyi Soyinka (20), Alhadeff (13) and Lederman (7) managing 40 goals between them.

Harry's arrival will also mean, somewhat bizarrely, that the 2nd XI will next season be able to field the Club's three leading goalscorers of all-time on a regular basis, Hoffen, Lederman & Soyinka all having scored around 100 career goals for the Club.

Many congratulations to Harry on an outstanding 1st XI career and good luck banging in the goals for the 2s next season!
