2017/18 Season Preview: The Questions

21 Aug 2017

As the first friendly games draw ever nearer, one starts to wonder what's in store for the season ahead. The highs and lows of recent years are still fresh in the memory. For 2017/18, new leadership, new players, new challenges.

The 1st XI's Golden Generation has all but disappeared and the side once again finds itself in the second tier of the Arthurian League. Will they bounce back to the big time straight away as they did two years ago? Other than Brentwood, who are their likely challengers? With the Sert era set to begin, will the new young skipper plump for tried and tested formations and lineups or opt for the fresh and potentially unrecognisable? Who will be given the nod as the first choice 'keeper? Who will fill Hoffen's illustrious striking boots? With the likes of Richardson, Poulter, Milln and Molloy still in the squad, there is no lack of experience but how regularly will they all be available? The squad will be boosted by Hill and Morrison who are tipped to return from long term injuries and Firoozan and Breeden Junior having now left their respective universities. New boys Adejokun and Payne have impressed in the build up but will they be rewarded with selection? Who else will join the party... Ciaran Jordan? Chester Robinson? Tom Ward?

After an extraordinary finish to last season's campaign, the 2nd XI will aim to stamp their mark on Division 2. With the Curry midfield engine stripped out until January, who is likely to fill their boots? Does Hoffen and Soyinka up front actually work? Are the rumours true... Is it really a higher standard than Division 1? If so, would Taunton-Collins' men rightfully consider an eighth place finish an achievement?

Can Kapoor, Ilogu and Smith lead the 3s into the elusive Division 4 for only the second time ever? Consistency of players will be key for the Three Amigos if they are to pick up points. As per the 1st XI, the goalkeeping question remains unanswered. One team clubs Rugbeians and Johnians undoubtedly set the level last year in Division 5 South. Will our boys have enough quality to challenge the likes of Ampleforth, Kings Scholars and new boys Shirburnians this time around?

The answers to these questions will become clearer over the coming weeks and months. One thing is for certain, the hunger, anticipation and desire to succeed remains as strong as ever.
