The OHAFC 1st XI ended their season in style as skipper Dan Firoozan brought down the curtain on his four seasons in charge of the side by scoring a last-minute winner away to the Old Kimboltonians. The win lifts the side into fifth in the Division One table and should ensure they finish no lower than sixth once the outstanding fixtures have all been played.
A strong side travelled north up the A1 to the University of Hertfordshire pitches with the skipper magnanimously relegating himself to the bench and allowing others to enjoy more minutes. In fact, he was forced to bring himself on with just over half an hour played in place of the struggling Cyprian Owen Edmunds, who had contracted a chest infection whilst abroad during the week.
The game was something of a slow burner, with a tight first half giving way to a more open second forty-five minutes. The longer the game wore on, the stronger the visitors grew. Winger Will Payne saw a goal disallowed for offside ten minutes into the half but the hosts then missed a glorious chance of their own, the striker firing wide with just the keeper to beat.
The visitors were now dominating and Arthur Leney was the next to spurn a chance, firing wide of the near post with just the keeper to beat. But with a quarter of an hour remaining, and very much against the run of play, the hosts took the lead from a corner - a continuing weakness for all OHAFC sides - with the ball possibly untouched as it flew through a crowd of bodies into the back of the net.
But the Blues recovered well and snatched victory in dramatic circumstances with two goals inside the final eight minutes. Leney fired home to draw the sides level before, in the dying seconds of the game, skipper Firoozan nutmegged the last defender before planting his shot beyond the keeper to spark scenes of wild celebration. Not only do the three points ensure a comfortable mid-table finish for the side, it also signifies a first competitive win over the Kimboltonians at the fourth attempt.
The first half of the season was undoubtedly stronger than the second for the Blues, who lost only three times prior to Christmas, with two of those defeats against the top two sides in the table. But all momentum was lost in the new year, with a run of six consecutive defeats prior to Saturday punctuated only by a dramatic last-minute victory over the Old Etonians.
Availability was notably stronger than in previous seasons with eight players playing at least 11 of the 19 League and Cup fixtures. Another eight players played seven or eight times. The team scored nine goals more in Division One than they did last season and conceded five fewer. The consistent presence of Tom Mitchell between the sticks an undoubted benefit.
Although the gap to the top three sides was considerable, with the Etonians and Foresters meeting in a final promotion-deciding game after Easter to determine who joins the unstoppable Old Ardinians in the Premier Division next season, the OHAFC can be relatively satisfied with their efforts over the past seven months and the fitting send-off they provided their popular skipper with in his final game in charge.
