Following a rather slow start to their campaign, the OHAFC 2nd XI appear to be building up quite a head of steam as they recorded their second consecutive victory, once more scoring four goals in the process. Despite a chaotic build-up to Saturday’s encounter with KCS Wimbeldon 2s on the Hill, the 2s made light work of the task at hand, scoring twice in the first half and sealing a comfortable victory with a couple of further goals in the final twenty minutes. Victory lifts the Blues into fourth in Division Three, their highest League placing of the season.

Both sides began the day level on four points, along with three other sides in the table, but when the final whistle blew it was clear there was a gulf in class between the teams. The Blues made light work of being stripped of their two substitutes, Everett and Lederman, who were required to help the 3s on the adjoining pitch, taking the lead inside ten minutes when a cross from the left was whipped into the box, Andres Hutchinson flicked on and Calum Butler, thrust into a midfield role on this occasion, was on hand to fire in from eight yards out.

The hosts continued in the ascendency, doubling their lead on the half-hour when Max Curry controlled a rebound brilliantly on the edge of the box and teed up Hutchinson on the right. The forward showed little fear in using his weaker right foot to first carry the ball past a couple of challenges before then drilling a precise low shot into the far bottom corner.

A very brief discussion followed at half-time about whether reinforcements were required, but with the 2s in complete control and the 3s battling to hold onto a 1-0 lead against the Wellingtonians, there really wasn’t a decision to make.

And the second half followed the pattern of the first with the home side well on top and in complete control. The hosts were made to work for the vital third goal that put the result beyond all doubt, skipper Tristan David converting from the spot after his joint-captain Miles Kellock had been felled inside the box.

The icing on the cake arrived ten minutes from time when Butler scored his second of the game to round off a fine individual performance, a first-time effort from the edge of the box that the keeper should perhaps have done better with, managing only to palm the ball inside the post.

But the scoreline didn’t flatter the Blues, who proved far too strong for a KCS side who left the Hill last season with a 3-2 victory to their name. The 2s now enjoy a week off before returning to action with a tricky fixture away to the Alleynians 3s on the astroturf in Dulwich. That game is likely to provide a far better indicator of the side’s potential going forwards for the remainder of the campaign.
