1st XI fall narrowly short after spirited comeback

13 Apr 2013

The OHAFC 1st XI fell narrowly short of gaining an unlikely point on Saturday when they fought back from 5-1 down at half-time to trail by a solitary goal with eight minutes remaining before conceding a sixth in the final minute at Old Cholmelians.

In a match played in appalling conditions on a quagmire of a pitch, the visitors started brightly and took the lead through an excellent de Rougemont goal after a quarter of an hour.

But as usual, some horrific defending then saw the home side take control, scoring four goals in quick succession before taking advantage of a freakishly lucky ricochet to grab a fifth just before the break.

Despite the scoreline and horrendous conditions, the Blues came back strongly in the second half, scoring twice from long throws to reduce the deficit to two. De Rougemont completed his hat-trick in the 82nd minute with a fine left-footed strike and a point was there for the taking minutes later but Harry Hoffen blazed over the bar from just a few yards out.

With everyone pushed forward in attack, Cholms scored a breakaway sixth in the final minute to rubberstamp the result.

Things continued to go terribly for the visitors after the game: the showers were freezing cold and Rupert Hoffen, yet again, forgot his shower gel, meaning those present were treated to a prolonged spell of him wandering around the dressing room naked in search of some.

Afterwards, in the clubhouse bar, a League Two standard tea was provided: Tesco value sandwiches and sausage rolls.

It had been a very bad day indeed for the 1st XI.
