1st XI into Dunn Quarter-Finals after epic struggle

8 Dec 2012

The OHAFC 1st XI reached the quarter-finals of the Arthur Dunn Cup on Saturday after a nerve-biting 4-3 win over a youthful, attacking Tonbridge team.

The home side struggled for long spells of the match to cope with the superior passing and movement of their spritely opposition, but progressed thanks to a combination of clinical finishing and defensive gumption.

As predicted, Tonbridge, the reigning cup holders, arrived on the Hill with a vastly different team to the one that was thrashed 8-0 back in October. And they were quickly into their stride, scoring from close-range after barely five minutes.

Harrow hit back quickly through two fine Nick Defty finishes, one a header, the second a lob over the advancing 'keeper. When Paul Molloy stabbed home from close range after a long throw-in shortly before the break, the tie looked to be heading Harrow's way.

But the second half proved an almighty struggle as wave after wave of Tonbridge attacks forced the side deeper and deeper into their own half.

A controversial second, when the ball apparently had gone out of play, was conceded five minutes into the half and the ball was twice cleared off the line to prevent an equaliser.

Charlie Stebbings' arrival quickly brought a fourth goal for the home side after another excellent finish to ease Harrow nerves, but the drama was still not over. A very harsh penalty, the second in consecutive weeks, was awarded against the hosts only for the Tonbridge skipper to blast over the bar. Two minutes later however they did score from a long throw meaning an agonising final ten minutes to hold on.

Harrow will find out their quarter-final opponents when the draw is made on December 19th. A full match report plus photos from the game will shortly be available on the website.
