Friday Stat Attack Special: 2's v Cholms OPTA stats

13 Dec 2013

For the first time in OHAFC history, the filming of a complete match has allowed video analysers to compile a comprehensive statistical breakdown of the players' performances. The match in question is the 2nd XI's 4-1 win over Cholms 2's on December 7th and below the stats from the game are presented, divided into three categories: Attacking, Defending and Possession.

The individual statistical categories should be fairly self-explanatory, the highlighted boxes in each column represent the following:

Gold - team leader, Silver - second best in team, Red - weakest in team

Where a player has played only part of a match or there is more than one player with a similar stat, several players have been included in the three categories.

ATTACKING STATISTICS

Interesting features to note:

  • The high pass completion rate of all the back four
  • The attacking threat posed by Woolley from right back
  • The domination in central midfield by Harder
  • The curious contrast in Cater's performance: the lowest pass completion rate of any player who played 90 minutes, yet he produced the most accurate crosses and created the most chances
  • The workrate of Amin - in an hour he attempted more passes than all but two players who played the full game
  • The 100% pass completion rate of substitute von Hirsch, even for only half an hour an exceptional feat
  • The side had 32 efforts at goal, 11 were on target

DEFENSIVE STATISTICS

alt text

Interesting features to note:

  • Once again, Harder and Amin's contribution in central midfield is clear: Harder high tackles and headers, Amin the most tackles in the game even though he only played an hour
  • The clear dislike of heading from right-back Woolley
  • The excellent clearing % from the back four, failing to clear once in 22 attempts
  • Possession gained & lost refers to interceptions and heavy touches or being caught in possession ONLY
  • Woolley & Orr-Ewing J anticipated better than anyone and completed 9 interceptions each
  • Understandably possession in midfield was harder to earn, however Owen-Edmunds and the two strikers posted negative totals in this aspect
  • von Hirsch committed three fouls in half an hour, the rest of the team combined made four in ninety minutes between them

POSSESSION STATISTICS

alt text

  • This set of statistics is designed to show who keeps the ball best and who gives it away most
  • Headers are not included because the vast majority were clearances and not passes, clearances cannot be counted meaningfully in possession retention stats
  • The excellent retention % of the back four, including, perhaps, some of the less technically gifted members of the squad
  • The struggles of the front two and wide midfielders to retain possession
  • The front two are not involved in the play so much so have less opportunity to complete passes
  • The wide players are under pressure to create chances in the final third and must take higher risks with their passing and crossing
  • The overall high percentages help explain why the home side created so many chances and ran out comfortable winners in the end
