Jubilee Cup a great success

2 Dec 2013

The annual Jubilee Cup competition was held in the Harrow Sports Hall on Sunday 1st December. Ably organised by Jack Robinson and curated with his usual verve by Fred Woolley, the cup was a great success. Tom Knight, whose support for the Club has been first class since taking over the head coaching role at Harrow, organised the boys and reffed all the games. Following the early season FestiPhil, the competition provides the boys with an insight into the OHAFC and allows the club to sell ourselves to the next generation. The 11 aside game, where the OH 1s play the school 1st XI, will be the final, and most keenly contested, competition involving both OHs and the school.

The standard of the boys has improved year on year; fitness levels were impressive, and technical ability high. Most importantly, the boys showed positional awareness and defensive nous, a product of better coaching and more football being played throughout the year at Harrow. An exciting prospect for the OHAFC as we look to the next generation to relieve aging squads.

Will Orr-Ewing and Alex Cater, catpaining the Yellow and Blue teams respectively, crashed out early, with Cater taking the wooden spoon after losing the 5th/6th playoff.

The first semi final, between purples (Beresford/Dalton) and blacks (Khan/von Hirsh) was decided on penalties, with the blacks triumphing after Beresford fluffed his second penalty miss of the game. The second semi, between Red (Jack Orr-Ewing/Elwell) and Green (Robinson/Bajwa) was again decided on pens. Jack Robinson blasting wide after keeper Orr-Ewing freaked him out with Bruce Grobbelar bendy-legs.

The final looked to be a closely competed affair until the blacks' best player was substituted after picking up a nasty injury. Will Orr-Ewing, trying to muscle in on a shot at the title, deputised.

The reds, whose attacking trio of Glover, Fisher and David were well organised and technically adept, romped to victory in the second half, winning 4-1. Jack Orr-Ewing, in his fifth attempt at the Jubilee Cup, finally gets his name on the silverware and will likely retire from the competition rather than formally cede the cup to less worthy holders.

Many thanks to all those involved in organising or playing in the competition. It's a great advertisement for the club and shows the continuing bond between Harrovians, both current former.
