Patched up 1s fall to late winner at Old Foresters

9 Dec 2019

The OHAFC 1st XI suffered late heart-break once more as an 83rd minute free-kick allowed the Old Foresters to snatch victory at a gloomy Fairlop Oak on Saturday afternoon.

Despite an excellent 6-4 win away to the Old Bradfieldians the previous weekend, skipper Fraser McGuinness was left scrambling around trying to find a bare eleven willing and able to make the trip round the north circular. As it was, the Blues only managed to field the requisite number of players thanks to David Lederman agreeing to play half the 2nd XI match on the Hill before travelling to Fairlop to start for the 1s.

And the patched up nature of the visiting side showed in a first half dominated by the hosts. That the Foresters only led 1-0 at the break courtesy of a headed goal from a corner was thanks to some stout defending and some wayward finishing from the hosts.

But the Blues performed much better in the second half, adopting a more direct approach on the awful surface, and deservedly levelled just after the hour thanks to a superb finish from Alex Breeden, who met Henry Charatan's cross from the right with an acrobatic volley that looped over the Forest keeper and into the far top corner.

Fraser McGuinness made a superb triple save to keep the sides level and, as time ticked on into the final ten minutes, it appeared as though the visitors had battled their way to an excellent point. But with seven minutes remaining, the Harrow skipper fouled a Forest player on the very edge of the penalty area and the hosts' skipper smashed the ensuing free-kick through the Harrow wall to spark scenes of jubilant celebration.

The defeat means the OHAFC stay seventh in the Premier Division ahead of this weekend's Arthur Dunn Cup clash at home to the KCS Wimbledon Old Boys.
