Unbeaten 2s secure 3 points at Aldenham

25 Oct 2014

The 2s maintained their unbeaten start to the season with an excellent 3-0 win over Aldenham.

Despite some notable absences, it was a strong line up that took to the field on a warm sunny October morning.

McHardy - Gordon - Orr-Ewing - Von Hirsch - Jorel Bajwa - Kerry - Jaguar Bajwa - Khan - Taunton Collins - Dalzell - Stead

Bench: Beeley - Elwell

With a number of late comers, preparation was not perfect, running onto the pitch just 10 minutes before kick off. However, Harrow were mentally prepared for the contest and started with a palpable intensity that never dropped until the final whistle.

On a massive pitch and good surface, Harrow looked comfortable with the ball all over the park. Theo Gordon, finally managing to engineer a right back berth due to Chopra being unavailable and wealth of excellent centre backs around, romped forward on numerous occasions into the space in front of him. No-one could work out why the space was always there, as it certainly wasn't his pace that freed him from the shackles of marking. The team settled on the explanation that the opposition underestimated the ambition of the better-than-he-looks full back.

Kerry and Jag Baj looked a natural pairing in central midfield, providing the perfect Arthurian League blend of steely tackling and comfortable possession play. But it was the other Bajwa, Jorel, that provided the creativity for Harrow's first. A well weighted through ball set up Stead, who still had a lot to do. The striker, on a dry patch on and off the pitch, took on the left back, cut inside to beat the centre back and fired it low to the keepers right, finding the back of the net. 1-0.

Pom Beeley and Elwell then came on after 30 mins for Khan and Jorel, but Harrow didn't let their performance drop. Unlike the previous outing where intensity dropped at 1-0, Harrow raised their game and looked to grow in stature. Harry Dalzell, one of the stand out performers this season, then suffered a torn hamstring, worrying the team ahead of a packed fixture list. But the changed proved a positive one as Khan's re-introduction allowed Harrow to secure the 3 points.

Having spent the week pestering the skipper with suggestions to change the tactics and team selection to better suit his own game, it was from the left flank that Khan got his first goal in over 2 years. A foul on Jag Baj didn't stop him from making a simple lateral pass to Khan, who was surely too far out to have a dig. Perhaps he was motivated by Orr-Ewing's pre-match programme notes, which demanded more goals from Khan and Stead, or perhaps it was his relentless and often misplaced positivity about everything; regardless of why, Khan unfurled a long shot from 30 yards out. A girlish squeal from jag Baj heralded the true horror of what was happening, as the ball rifled perfectly into the top right corner. Despite the knowledge that this moment would be replayed and referenced to well into 2015, the wide eyed expression of pure ecstasy on the midfielders face was worth the inevitable self promotion.

A third soon followed as Harrow maintained a high press. A cross from Taunton Collins looked to be going into the 'keepers hands; not today, not with corporal Kezza on the hunt for a fourth goal of the season. The midfielder threw himself at the opposition stopper, walloping the chap and forcing a spill. Sensing a chance to add to his tally, Khan arrived in timely fashion to head home for his second. 2-0.

At half time Harrow congratulated themselves on an excellent half, having conceded no shots on target and holding all the possession. Pom Beeley had shored up the midfield well, taking their main threat out of action and allowing Jag Baj more freedom.

In the second half, Harrow continued to dominate, with v Hirsch and Orr-Ewing on hand to stamp out any threat the home side could muster. Taunton Collins made several breaks down the right, well supported by Gordon. Elwell, after an unsteady first minute mis-control, performed admirably for an hour, almost scoring late on. A structural flaw I'm the squad was exposed when it became apparent that neither full back could do a throw in. A series of humiliating foul throws and various combinations of fill in throwers, suggests a more coherent plan is required for next week.

Despite chances for a Stead, Elwell and ridiculous long shots from Kerry and Jorel, Harrow were unable to score In the second half, and ran out 3-0 winners. Mchardy had one notable save to make and some routine work, a testament to the hard work and concentration of the players in front of him.

A thoroughly satisfying day for the squad and a very useful 3 points for the league. Player league tables and photos to follow.
