Vets fight back to defeat Winchester 5-2

3 Nov 2013

The OHAFC Veterans fought back from 2-0 down against the Old Wykehamists at the Bank of England on Sunday morning to record an excellent 5-2 win.

With better availability from his squad, including the first appearances this season of Nick Warner and Seb Stones, skipper John Wyn-Evans named a strong 12 on a sunny but blustery morning in SW12.

The pitch had recovered slightly from the previous week and the Harrow Vets generally took advantage, passing the ball around with far more certainty and purpose than in the defeat to Lancing seven days ago.

Jon Ingram, who started in goal, had barely touched the ball midway through the half but within three minutes two different Harrow 'keepers were picking the ball out of the net as Winchester capitalised on some slack defending. First, a long throw was flicked on leaving a simple chance at the far post. Then, with Mark Baddeley now between the posts, a long Winchester goal kick sailed over everyone and allowed the striker a simple finish one-on-one.

Harrow responded well however with Stones and Chris Hollins looking threatening up front and Nick Warner using his pace down the left. This proved to be the source of Harrow's solitary strike before the break, the winger outpacing the labouring Winchester right-back and then fooling the 'keeper by placing his shot in at the near post when a cross looked the more likely option.

After the break Harrow's superiority slowly began to tell on the scoreboard.

The equaliser was identical to Winchester's opener, a long throw from the right flicked on for Ed Thorn to hammer home from eight yards out.

Chris Hollins, whose father John, the former Chelsea manager, was watching on from the side, calmly accepted a perfect through-ball to sprint through and finish with authority to give the home side the lead.

Skipper Wyn-Evans then set up two more goals, unselfishly teeing up Burley when he could have shot himself, before then playing in Seb Stones down the left to finish high into the net.

There was still time for Pete Harris to smack the crossbar with a blunderbuss from the edge of the box but it was academic and the Vets ran out worthy 5-2 winners.

The Vets now have a week off before returning to action on the 17th.
