Vets with major injury problems ahead of Cup game

21 Jan 2014

John Wyn-Evans, skipper of the OH Vets team, has been dealt a cruel hand in his bid to lead the side back to the final of the Derrick Moore Cup with the news that four of his key players are almost certainly unavailable for this Sunday's quarter-final trip to Charterhouse.

1st XI regulars Harry Hoffen and Quentin Baker are both still struggling with long-term knee injuries, Baker's collected in the extra-time win over Westminsters in the last round of the competition back in November.

Paul Molloy, making his Vets team debut this season, suffered cruel luck at training last Tuesday night when he went over on his ankle barely a minute into the session and badly strained the ligaments almost certainly ruling himself out of Sunday's clash as well.

With regular 'keeper Andy Butler and the versatile Jamie Waugh unavailable, Wyn-Evans' squad is now down to the bare bones.

Two bright spots on the horizon are the return to service of Nick Warner, who was away for the first round tie, and the fact that the OHAFC faced a similarly daunting trip to Charterhouse back in 2012, the year they won the competition, and came away with a comfortable 5-1 win.

A repeat this weekend is odds-against, but Vets football is one sport where the bookmakers and punters are on a fairly equal footing...

OHAFC Vets travel to Charterhouse School on Sunday morning, KO 11am. All support most welcome.
