Alex Gilbert

biography

'Gilbs' is one of the quickest players in the club and can play on either flank or through the middle. Strong and over 6ft tall, he is a physically impressive specimen as well as being a hit with the ladies - Alex is a former male model who occasionally DJs in London clubs far too trendy for most of his teammates to get into.

He captained the 3rd XI for two demanding seasons from 2008-2010 in Division 4 before handing over the captaincy to Antonio del Balzo. His time in the 3s was spent on the wing or up front alongside good friend Stof Magrath.

He joined the 2s at the start of the 2010/11 season, making his debut as a substitute in the 3-1 home defeat to Westminster 2s on the Hill. He then made his first start in the return game at the end of November, the Blues on the wrong end of a 4-3 result.

Alex only played sporadically for the side before his big break came in the 2013/14 season. A number of 1st XI strikers were coming to the end of their careers and Alex was given a chance on the left wing in the first round of the Dunn Cup against Repton in early November. His blistering pace and direct style caused numerous problems for the Repton defence and despite losing the game 3-2, Alex had done enough to earn himself a regular place in the squad.

He scored his first goal for the side the week after the Repton defeat, netting the final goal in a 6-1 rout of Brentwood and ended the season with a respectable 3 goals from 10 appearances.

The relegation season of 2014/15 saw Alex paired up front with Harry Hoffen and he was a near regular, appearing 15 times in League and Cup, scoring six goals.

The following season in Division One the 1s used a more defensive 4-5-1 formation for much of the season and Alex was switched to the left wing, but he still registered the respectable tally of five goals from 16 appearances.

Season 2016/17 saw the 1st XI struggle once more at the foot of the Premier Division but Alex matched his tally of the season before, scoring five goals from 14 appearances.

His appearances in the first half of the 2017/18 season were more sporadic and by Christmas Gilbs had managed just a single goal from four appearances.
