Fred Milln

biography

The ‘Professor’, Fred Milln made his first appearance for the club in the 2008/9 season, playing for the 2nd XI in a 5-2 defeat to Eton at John Lyon in terrible conditions. Not easily dissuaded, Fred stuck around for the remainder of the season and soon demonstrated to those who watched him that his lack of brain power was more than compensated by his physical presence, bravery and football ‘savvy’.

A typical English centre-half, Fred is ruthless in the tackle, dominant in the air and has a left foot that can send the ball into a number of different post codes from the top of Harrow hill.

His unique skill sets were soon identified as something that would be of great benefit to the 1st XI and he began the 2009/10 season competing for a place at centre-half with Ed Poulter and Will Orr-Ewing. Fred ended the season with 9 appearances to his name and was a major factor in the title being won, playing outstandingly in the two vital wins over Charterhouse as the title race reached its climax.

He continued to go from strength to strength and became a key member of the 1st XI for a number of seasons, as well as turning out regularly for the Arthurian League Rep side.

He made thirteen appearances in the 2010/11 season but was then injured for the start of the following campaign, limiting him to just eleven League games. As one of three players to go off injured in the Dunn Cup quarter-final at Tonbridge in 2011/12, his departure midway through the first half was a crucial factor in the heart-breaking extra-time defeat.

Fred was back to his no-nonsense best in 2012/13, playing in seventeen games, scoring four goals and picking up two red and two yellow cards in the process. Three of his four goals came in the same match, the 8-0 hammering of Tonbridge early in the season - his teammates were to be reminded of this feat on more than one occasion as the season dragged on.

Nevertheless, despite his goalscoring feats and the generally high level of performance, his ill-discipline, both in collecting red and yellow cards and in conceding penalties, continued to hurt the side and he became something of a notorious figure in League circles.

Fred worked hard on his discipline in season 2013/14, receiving only a single yellow card and scoring three goals in the 11 appearances he made. Rather bizarrely, the 4-1 defeat at home to Charterhouse in March was to be Fred's final game of the season - the criticism he received for what was, admittedly, a poor performance led to him swapping the Hill for Stamford Bridge as Chelsea stormed to, er, third in the League.

Despite this, Fred was elected 1st XI Vice Captain in September 2015, taking over from Fred Richardson as Ed Poulter's assistant, and he made thirteen appearances for the side as they returned to the Premier League at the first time of asking, scoring twice and earning a solitary yellow card.

But the continued struggles of the side in comparison to his early playing days saw Fred's enthusiasm for OHAFC football diminish and he would play in only seven games in 2016/17, several times donning the gloves and proving he was as useful with his hands as he is with his feet.

A combination of a lingering knee ligament injury and the lure of watching a dull Chelsea side struggle on a weekly basis at Stamford Bridge saw Fred appear just once prior to Christmas 2017. Sure enough, the big man proved his worth once more, nodding home a free-kick at the far post to help the 2s on their way to a vital 2-1 win over their Lancing counterparts.
