Ed Poulter to captain the 1s for the final time

5 May 2017

After five seasons in charge of the team, 1st XI skipper will lead the side out for the final time on Saturday afternoon when the Blues complete their 2016/17 League programme with a trip to Double-winners the Old Carthusians.

Ed has captained the side through a tumultuous period for the 1st XI squad, with many of the 'Golden Generation' who won two League titles and the Dunn Cup either retiring altogether or significantly reducing their commitment to the cause.

Against this backdrop Ed has had to find new young players, not an easy task for someone who last year was old enough to qualify for Veterans football. Ed has managed this task well, recruiting numerous players to the cause who will hopefully continue to represent the club moving forwards.

Having taken over the reins from long-standing captain Quentin Baker at the start of the 2012/13 season, Ed oversaw a couple of years of stability in the upper reaches of the Premier Division and a run to the semi-finals of the Dunn Cup before time finally caught up with an ageing squad, relegation to Division One ensuing in 2014/15.

But Ed turned things round the following campaign and, as a younger core began to emerge, promotion back into the Premier Division was sealed as runners-up to Brentwood in Division One in 2015/16, along with a run to the quarter-finals of the Dunn Cup.

This season has again, disappointingly, ended in relegation for the side but there is still cause for optimism. Ed has forged an excellent team spirit among the group and a number of highly-talented young players have turned out for the team, many of them earning their first taste of Arthurian League football. This will hopefully be the legacy Ed leaves as he steps aside to allow a younger man to take over from him.

'Poults' has been a tremendous servant of the OHAFC since joining the club in the 2005/06 season. He has enjoyed some notable highs including forming part of the victorious Dunn Cup-winning squad in 2006/7, starting the Final at centre-half. He also played in all but three of the 1st XI’s sixteen League matches in 2009/10 when they went on to lift the title. He scored Harrow’s only goal, a perfectly placed curled effort from the edge of the box, in a vital 1-1 draw away to Lancing and was superb at the back alongside his partner in crime Fred Milln in the decisive wins against Charterhouse towards the end of the season.

As skipper he has continued to press for greater commitment to training, a plea that still appears to fall largely on deaf ears, and has even made an appearance on tour - choosing Hamburg in 2014 to spark the beginnings of a beautiful friendship with Bobby Tindall - two very different peas from the same pod.

Known for his fiery temper, weird Instagram posts and having a girlfriend half his age, it is very much hoped that Poults will continue to form part of the 1s squad next season and beyond.

He should be easy enough to spot. He'll be the one screaming at you for not standing where his mis-placed pass went...

MANY CONGRATULATIONS TO POULTS ON HIS FIVE YEARS IN CHARGE OF THE OHAFC 1ST XI
