Harrow School exit Boodles Cup at hands of Eton

The Harrow School 1st XI controlled long spells of Tuesday's third round Boodles Cup match at Eton College but couldn't cope with the greater physicality of their opponents and in particular their height at set-pieces. A goal from a free-kick before the break and a second from a corner with a quarter of an hour remaining put the tie beyond Harrow's reach and a late third on the break gave the final 3-0 scoreline a rather lopsided view.

Both sides possessed players on the books of professional clubs with Harrow including QPR striker Ody Alfa and Spurs midfielder Armando Shashoua, younger brother of Sam, a former Harrow schoolboy. Eton's left winger meanwhile also turns out for Chelsea but he was well-marshalled throughout and it was the two Harrovians who spent the majority of the game trying to weave their way through a well-organised Eton rearguard.

The hosts started the brighter of the two teams and for the opening twenty minutes controlled the game, passing the ball with much greater authority than the visitors. Gradually however Harrow began to settle and several times they came close to earning a breakthrough, moves inevitably breaking down on the edge of the box with the Eton goal in sight.

It was little surprise however that Eton should open the scoring from a set-piece, with three of their players dwarfing anyone in the Harrow ranks. A ball was delivered to the far post where Etonian centre-half Theo Tritton managed to control it before swivelling to smash home.

The second half saw play concentrated in the Eton half for long spells as Harrow searched for a way back into the game but too often moves fizzled out due to a lack of width and Alfa being crowded out whenever in possession.

Eton, roared on by a vocal crowd of around 200 supporters, offered little by way of threat throughout the half but a corner gave them all the opportunity they needed to deliver the ball into the box and Tritton swooped to head home his second.

Harrow pushed everyone forwards in desperation and they were caught out minutes from time when a long ball over the top allowed their dangerous striker to run on and finish past Saunders in the Harrow goal, sending the Etonian supporters wild with delight.

The result was harsh on the visitors who gave their all but, as can happen in school sport, on this occasion size and physicality proved superior to technical ability.
