'Essex leg' record scuppered by late fixture switch

7 Nov 2013

The OHAFC 1st XI were due to set a new record on Saturday for the earliest date by which all away fixtures in Essex are completed, beating their previous best by 17 days. Sadly, a last-minute fixture switch will now see the game played at Harrow and so the record will have to wait for another season at least.

In the 2011/12 season, the OHAFC 1's were presented with trips to Chigwell and Forest in the first three games of the season. They then had to wait until November 26th to travel to Brentwood and complete the famed 'Essex Leg' of their season.

This season has seen the team on the road for the majority of their games, with five of their first seven fixtures away from home.

Ed Poulter's men travelled to Forest on the opening day of the season and returned to north east London on October 17th to face Chigwell, both games finishing 1-1.

Following further away fixtures versus Lancing and Repton in the Dunn Cup, this Saturday's planned journey to Old Brentwoods would have been the team's fifth away game out of seven and seen the 'Essex Leg' done and dusted by November 9th - no wonder Club drinks were arranged to aid the celebrations.

But waterlogged pitches have now meant the game has been switched to Harrow and any chance at the record gone, with a week off requested next weekend and a visit to Malvern the week after.

Nevertheless, the 1's are sure to still be in buoyant mood come Saturday night, with the joy of not having had to travel to Brentwood a cause for even greater celebration.

All 1's players will now be expected in the Princess Victoria by 3pm.
