2023 Festiphil - Awdry's Greens triumphant

12 Sep 2023

Following last year's cancellation owing to the death of Her Majesty the Queen, the OHAFC and Harrow schoolboys once more resumed hostilities on the Hill on Saturday afternoon in the tenth edition of the annual Festiphil Tournament.

New Master in Charge of Soccer Robbie Tominey-Nevado organised the boys as best as possible given that the 1st XI were unavailable due to a tournament in Shrewsbury the following day and certain others were otherwise engaged. Nevertheless, an enthusiastic mix of players joined 22 OHs to form four sides in a round robin tournament with Ali Buckley (Yellows), Joss Awdry (Greens), Geoff Taunton-Collins (Reds) and John Russell (Blues) named as skippers.

The players were given a brief overview of the rules beforehand, with everyone in agreement that due to the scorching temperatures, matches would be reduced from thirty to twenty-five minutes.

The early action was notable for the closeness of the matches but, once the dust had settled, and once it had been agreed that the final round of games would be shortened further still with some players on their last legs, the fixture list worked out well, Greens meeting Reds in a winner-takes-all finale, whilst the Yellows and Blues met to avoid the wooden spoon.

It was a fitting name on the scoresheet in the final, with Adam Graham scoring a superb effort to clinch a 1-0 win for Joss Awdry's Greens. Adam had already scored four times in the first two rounds, unofficially claiming the title of Best OH Player on the day.

Meanwhile, the Blues and Yellows fought to the end to avoid ending pointless, the Blues just holding onto a 3-2 win despite a late rally from the Yellows.

Following the games, both the Master in Charge and OHAFC Chairman David Lederman both spoke briefly to extol the virtues of the competition and highlight the close links between the OHAFC and the school. The masters were thanked for giving up their time to officiate the matches, as was Will Payne for his excellent organisation on behalf of the old boys. Fred Woolley then assisted in the presentation of Festiphil trophy to Joss Awdry and the Greens, whilst Peter Ballingal was named Young Player of the Tournament.
