3s begin with 'gritty' draw vs Merchant Taylors

15 Sep 2014

The 3s kicked off their season with a solid gritty 1-1 against OMT’s 1’s.

A new look team with no less than 7 debutants performed well on a terrible pitch, which was more suited for a game of harrow footer, with many of the members mentioning feels of nostalgia with the Sheepcoat fields.

The team started in a 4-5-1 formation, opting for defensive wingers similar to Park Ji Sung (Fogarty) and James Milner (Sewell), with Mee as a lone striker who worked his socks off. This allowed Turner to assess the opposition, who had recorded a strong pre-season against top division opposition.

As predicted the start of the half was cagey from both sides, no one quite assured of their first touch on the poor surface. What was assured was Harrow's work rate and determination which showed as they grew into the half. With the introduction of the Faber brothers half way through the first half, Harrow started to move the ball around nicely - Tommy Faber instrumental in keeping possession of the ball for the blues.

Sewell and Richards were starting to combine well down the left and as a result of one of their attacks, won a corner. First blood was drawn by Harrow, with a spectacular effort from Feather. The ball was cleared to the edge of the penalty box and was leathered home on the volley in a controlling fashion by the debutant.

Not soon after though, OMT’s were level with a neat move from the better of the two of teams. A splitting defence pass was met with a composed finish from the captain. Half time came and Turner, encouraged by Harrow's dominance towards the end of the half, demanded the team to push forward and take more risks. Turner lead by example, taking the ball on several occasions from centre back and driving at the opposition. As a result the game became more open, with both teams looking for the winner.

Sewell came close with a superb effort from the edge of the box, which cannoned off the bar shrieking “Hitlzleburger!” as he took the shot. OMT’s also came close, with Atkinson making some great last ditch tackles and Callander throwing his body on the line to make some goal saving blocks.

James Gallagher as well did well in goal to catch/parry several crosses. It turns out OMT's were right to keep their distance considering what what on display in the changing rooms after the final whistle...

At the death, Pom Beeley swung in a cultured ball which Fogarty haplessly put wide with his right.

Overall, the team performed well under tricky conditions and showed grit and determination to grind out the draw. There were several periods of eye catching football by Turner's men and they will now look to build from this. Furthermore, last season's top scorer Alex Smith is expected to return shortly which will only bolster attacking options.
