Khan's blues victorious in FestiPhil

21 Sep 2014

The third FestiPhil tournament on Saturday was superbly organised by Jack Orr-Ewing and School 1st XI Coach, Tom Knight and it was another resounding success. As with previous years, four mixed teams of OH's and schoolboys contested a round robin competition followed by a final between the two sides with the most points.

This year's captains were 1st XI fullback Phil Berry (Reds), Hon. Recruitment Secretary Azhar Khan (New Blues), centre back stalwart Will Orr-Ewing (Old Blues) and his brother & tournament organiser Jack Orr-Ewing (Whites). With many OH 1st XI players injured or unavailable, the teams were brimming with 2nd and 3rd XI enthusiasm including season debutants Geoff Taunton-Collins, David Igbokwe, Ollie Feather, James Mee and Jenghis Dewan.

The tournament was competitive and of a high standard with each team playing some excellent football. The final, refereed by Tom Knight, was a tense affair contested between Khan's New Blues and Jack Orr-Ewing's Whites. Having already played 120 minutes of football over the course of the day, the sides went in 0-0 at half-time. Tired legs were showing in the second half but the New Blues produced a moment of brilliance to settle it. Tottenham Academy youngster Sam Shashoua (Rendalls), who had wreaked havoc throughout the day, curled a clinical left foot shot around the Whites' stopper and into the bottom corner. Despite a late surge from Orr-Ewing's men the game ended 1-0.

Courtesy of the School, a BBQ and beers were provided for players and spectators. Jack Orr-Ewing lead the presentation ceremony with reluctant congratulations to winning captain and good friend Khan. With the help of former Club President Fred Woolley, Lizzy Worthy then presented two 2013/14 season trophies - to Alex Smith the Bert Worthy Young Player of the Year Award in memory of Lizzy's late husband and to Jack Orr-Ewing the Jubilee 5-a-side Cup.

The FestiPhil is the first of three PR events with the School this season. The second being the 1s & 2s 11-a-side games on Saturday 15th November and thirdly the Jubilee 5-a-side Cup on Sunday 7th December.

OHAFC would like to thank the School for its continued support and wishes Tom Knight's 1st XI the best of luck in the first round of the Boodles Cup v Bury Grammar on Wednesday.

Photos of the day will be available in the Media section shortly.
