FestiPhil 2013 a huge success for the Club

24 Sep 2013

The second hosting of the Festiphil tournament was a huge success on Saturday thanks to the surprisingly excellent organisation of 2nd XI captain Jack Orr-Ewing and the willing spirit shown by all who took part.

Five teams were raised this year with each side containing a mixture of 1st, 2nd & 3rd XI players, Veterans and current schoolboys. The tournament was played in a round-robin format with each team playing their four opponents in 20 minute games.

With games only lasting twenty minutes, goals were at a premium and after the round-robin format was concluded, the Reds, led by Jack Orr-Ewing finished ahead of the Whites, captained by Dave Stead, thereby qualifying for the final. Bizarrely, the Blues, led by Theo Gordon, were eliminated despite conceding just a solitary goal in their four matches and that just two minutes from the end of their final game against the Reds. They joined the Golds, captained by Ed Poulter, and the Black and Whites, led by Fred Richardson on the sidelines.

The final, refereed by Harrow schoolmaster and former OHAFC 1st XI legend Tim Dalton, was a tense affair that saw the sides end level at 1-1 after half an hour, both sides showing the strains of a long afternoon's football. A penalty shootout to determine the winner was understandably demanded from the watching throng of spectators and again it went right to the wire. Current School 1st XI goalkeeper George Fox used his 6' 5" frame to excellent effect, saving the vital fourth penalty from the Reds to hand the shootout 5-4 to the Whites.

After the Final, an excellent BBQ was kindly laid on by the school and tournament organisers Orr-Ewing and Stead dished out some interesting prizes they had purchased from Sports Direct.com (UK's naaamber one). Fox was awarded Tournament MVP for his vital penalty save and there were bottles of wine for those who had helped with the event's smooth running, as well as thanks given to the referees who kindly volunteered their Saturday afternoons.

This excellent event is sure to become an annual feature of pre-season for the OHAFC, helping to showcase the club to the school players and in turn giving a glimpse into the future supply of players the club can look forward to welcoming in the not-too-distant future.
