Soyinka return inspires 2s to late Chigs win

22 Jan 2019

The OHAFC 2nd XI had to rely on susbstitute Gbeminiyi Soyinka for some late inspiration as they fought back from 1-0 down with half an hour remaining to claim a vital 2-1 win at home to the Old Chigwellians 2s on Saturday.

Despite dominating the first half, the Blues failed to take their chances – Cyprian Owen-Edmunds fired wide following a superb cross from Andres Hutchinson before David Lederman then suffered a rare lapse from the spot, seeing his spot-kick saved after Geoff Taunton-Collins had been fouled in the box.

Chigs took advantage following a strong spell after the break, scoring with a fine shot after possession had been carelessly lost inside the Harrow half. But the introduction of Soyinka, returning from a knee injury for his first appearance of the season, boosted the hosts and they levelled from a long throw, Soyinka losing his marker to turn the ball in from close range.

A dramatic final fifteen minutes ensued. Harrow earned their second penalty of the game when Owen-Edmunds was fouled inside the box and this time Lederman made no mistake. But with just a few minutes remaining the visitors were certain they should have had a penalty of their own, Jack Orr-Ewing falling to the ground along with a Chigwellian as he prepared to shoot. Referee Julian Courtenay waved away the frantic appeals and the Blues held on. The win lifts the OHAFC into fifth in the Division Two table ahead of this weekend’s Junior League Cup tie away to the Old Epsomians.
