Weekend Round-Up: 1s nearly safe with superb win

28 Mar 2023

Once again, vastly different fortunes were enjoyed by the two senior OHAFC teams this weekend - but, in contrast to last week, it was the 1s who took the plaudits, whilst the 2s struggled.

Desperately needing a win to give themselves a chance at staying in Division One next season, the OHAFC 1st XI travelled down to Whitton to face the Old Rugbeians on the back of three straight defeats. But a superb first half display, the best seen from an OHAFC side for several seasons, saw the visitors lead 4-0 at the break. Charlie Bick converted a penalty inside the first minute, George Taylor scored twice and Will Payne added the fourth.

A more even second half saw the Rugbeians score three times late on, but Taylor completed his first ever hat-trick for the club to ensure there would be no miracle comeback. The three points ensure the 1s are nearly safe, although there is still a slim chance they could yet be dragged into the relegation battle.

A relegation battle is exactly what the OHAFC 2s find themselves in, however, following an unfortunate 2-1 loss away to their Old Etonian counterparts.

On a bobbly pitch in windy conditions, both sides struggled in a dour first half that saw neither keeper really tested.

The second half again saw chances hard to come by, but the Etonians scored twice inside ten minutes via vastly different goals - the first came from a goalkeeping error from Tom Mitchell, the second was a magnificent 40 yard strike that flew into the top corner.

Athough Tom Ward pulled a goal back shortly afterwards, the visitors failed to find an equaliser in the closing stages and now face an anxious wait over the next few weeks to discover if their final fixture at home to the Old Sennockians still leaves them with a chance of avoiding the drop.

Team sheets and match reports from both games are now available in the results section.
