Weekend Round-Up: Goals galore - at the wrong ends
Once again, all three OHAFC sides were in action, although only the 1st XI managed to avoid defeat.
The 1s were involved in a dramatic 4-4 draw against the Division One bottom side the Old Johnians on the Phil. Twice the hosts were forced to come from two goals down either side of the break. The visitors raced into a two-goal lead and were then given a reprieve when skipper Dan Firoozan fired a penalty over the bar. But goals from Will Payne and Ed Beecham – both scoring for the first time this season – saw the sides level again at 2-2.
There was still time for further drama before the break as the Johnians missed a penalty of their own, keeper Tom Mitchell making a fine save low to his right. But the visitors again started the second half the stronger and again opened up a two-goal cushion, only for the Blues to hit back with two late goals of their own. Ed Beecham scored his second with a quarter of an hour remaining to reduce the arrears to one, before George Taylor sealed the comeback five minutes from time, bundling a cross from Firoozan over the line with his chest.
The OHAFC 2nd XI fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat away to the Old Alleynians 3s in an early kick-off down in Dulwich. The visitors fell behind after a quarter of an hour from a corner but rallied well and were the better side for the majority of the first half. But the Alleynians scored a brilliant second on the hour mark, a flying volley doubling the hosts’ lead. Ed Stewart headed in at the far post with fifteen minutes remaining to give the Blues a glimmer of hope, but they were unable to find an equaliser despite some late pressure.
And the OHAFC 3s endured a miserable morning on the banks of the Thames at Barn Elms, being demolished 8-0 by runaway Division Five leaders the Old St Edwardians. A makeshift lineup fell three goals behind early on and never recovered, the healthy goal difference built up in the first four games now completely wiped out.
Team sheets and match reports from all three games are now available in the results section.
