1s battle hard but suffer late Charterhouse loss

28 Jan 2020

The OHAFC 1st XI battled bravely against the reigning Arthurian League champions, but a red card for winger Alex Gilbert with half an hour remaining left the Blues with too much to do, the Old Carthusians eventually running out 5-2 winners on the Hill.

Up to that point, it had been a highly competitive and enjoyable game. The visitors stormed into an early lead courtesy of a superb opening goal, but the hosts grew into the game and levelled just before the break when James Breeden finished off a well-worked move.

The OHAFC continued to press after the break but conceded a sloppy goal against the run of play, only to level again from the spot, Breeden earning the penalty before converting it. At that stage either side looked capable of going on to claim the win, but the tie turned decisively in the visitors favour in the next few minutes. Another avoidable goal was conceded before referee Stephen Tate was left with little choice as Gilbert scythed down an opponent in the centre circle. He was promptly shown a second yellow card and the Blues were down to ten.

Unsurprisingly, recovering the situation proved beyond the home team and a couple of late goals added gloss to a scoreline that for much of the game had looked like being far closer.

Defeat leaves the OHAFC still with some work to do in their final three fixtures of the season if they are to avoid returning to Division One after only a season in the top flight.
